How Tooth Decay Starts And Which Habits Raise The Chance

Tooth decay starts when bacteria in plaque turn sugar into acid, and that acid weakens the enamel. How often you have sugar matters, not only how much you have in a day. This guide explains that process, the habits that keep it going, and why whitening does not repair a cavity.

A cavity is a hole that can follow that acid damage. Before a hole forms, the enamel may only have lost minerals, and that early change can sometimes reharden. Once a hole is there, it does not close on its own. How far the damage has gone is something a dentist judges by examining the tooth. This page explains the cause and the habits. It is not a personal diagnosis.

01

How Tooth Decay Starts

Tooth decay starts on the surface of the tooth. Bacteria in a sticky film called plaque use sugar from food and drink and produce acid. Over time that acid takes minerals out of the enamel, the hard outer layer. The UK prevention toolkit describes this as a changing balance: minerals leave the enamel, and they can return when the acid challenge eases. Early decay can still be reversed. When the acid challenge continues, the surface can break and a cavity forms.

  1. 01Plaque On The ToothA film of bacteria sits on the enamel. Brushing disturbs it. Left in place, it keeps the acid next to the tooth.
  2. 02Sugar Becomes AcidFree sugars in food and drink are the fuel. The bacteria produce acid after each intake, not only after a large amount.
  3. 03Minerals Leave The EnamelThe early change can be a white spot. Fluoride and fewer sugar intakes can help that stage reharden.
  4. 04A Hole Can FormA cavity does not fill itself in. If the damage reaches the pulp in the middle of the tooth, the treatment is no longer a simple repair of the surface.

Plaque, Sugar And Acid

Plaque is the film. Sugar is the fuel. Acid is what softens the enamel. The NHS describes tooth decay as often linked with sugary food and drink and with teeth and gums that are not cleaned regularly. Enamel does not cause decay. Decay is damage to the enamel, and then to the softer dentine underneath if the process continues. A grey, brown or black spot can be a later sign. It is not something to scrape away at home.

The Early Stage And A Hole

At the start there may be no pain at all. The NHS notes that decay may not cause symptoms at first, and that a dentist can prescribe a fluoride varnish or mouthwash to reverse early decay. A hole is a later stage. A filling is then the usual repair, because the lost tooth structure does not grow back. Fluoride toothpaste supports the early mineral repair. It does not remove decay that has already become a cavity.

02

Habits That Raise The Chance

The habits that raise the chance are frequent sugar, plaque left on the teeth, and less saliva to buffer the acid afterwards. One sweet drink with a meal is a different pattern from the same drink sipped over an afternoon. The amount still counts. The number of times the teeth meet sugar counts as well.

How Often Sugar Is Taken

The UK prevention toolkit says that sugar intake and the frequency of that intake are particularly relevant for dental caries. After sugar is taken, bacteria convert it to acid and the tooth surface can lose minerals. Saliva then buffers the acid. The toolkit describes that return towards a safer pH as about 20 to 40 minutes. That range is a general picture of the mouth, not a timer for every person. Sipping or snacking through the day starts the drop again before the last one has settled. Keeping sugary food and drink to mealtimes, when saliva flow is higher, means fewer separate attacks.

Honey, fruit juice, smoothies and dried fruit contain sugars that can feed the same process. They are not a free pass between meals. Plain water, or plain milk, between meals leaves the teeth without that repeated sugar contact. A fizzy drink can also wear enamel by acid erosion, which is chemical loss even when bacteria are not using sugar. A sugary fizzy drink can do both. This page is about decay, the bacterial acid from sugar.

Cleaning And Fluoride

Plaque left on the tooth holds the bacteria against the enamel. Brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste clears much of that film. The NHS advice is to spit after brushing and not to rinse, so the fluoride is not washed straight off. Cleaning between the teeth every day, with floss or an interdental brush, reaches the contacts a toothbrush misses. Brushing once in a while, or not at all, leaves food and plaque in place. That is a habit that raises the chance. It is not a moral failing, and it is not fixed by a harder scrub of a tooth that already has a hole.

Dry Mouth And Saliva

Saliva buffers acid and helps clear food. The toolkit notes that saliva is stimulated at meals and is much lower during sleep. A dry mouth means less of that buffering, so the same sugar intake sits in a more acidic mouth for longer. Sugary drinks through the night meet the teeth when saliva is already low. If your mouth is often dry, or a medicine makes it so, tell the dentist. This page cannot name which medicine is responsible.

03

Who Has A Higher Chance

Anyone with teeth can develop decay. The chance is higher when sugar is taken often, when plaque is left in place, or when saliva is low. Age changes the pattern. It does not switch the process off. Nothing on this page is a personal risk score.

Children And Baby Teeth

The NHS says tooth decay is common in children, so cleaning and sugar habits matter from the early years. Sugary drinks given often, including from a bottle or a cup, keep baby teeth in contact with sugar. Baby teeth are still worth protecting. They are used for eating, and they hold space for adult teeth. A check is the way to know whether a mark is decay.

Adults And Older Fillings

Adults develop new decay as well. A tooth that already has a filling can decay at the edge if plaque and sugar remain there. If the gum recedes, the root surface can be exposed, and that surface can decay too. An old filling is not a shield. It is a join that still needs cleaning.

What This List Does Not Decide

Stress does not make the acid. It can change habits: more frequent sugary snacks, or brushing that gets skipped. Those habits are the pathway. The NHS prevention list also says not to smoke, and not to drink more than the low-risk alcohol guidance. Smoking is a wider risk for the mouth. It is not, by itself, the acid that starts a cavity. A medical condition or a medicine that dries the mouth belongs in the conversation with a dentist. Leaving a condition untreated is not a plan this page can set.

04

Signs And What Can Follow

Early decay often has no symptom you can feel. A dentist may see it before you notice a hole. Later signs can include sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet things, a white, brown or black spot, an unpleasant taste, or toothache. Pain is a reason to book a check. It is not a measure of how simple the repair will be.

A Spot, Sensitivity Or Bleeding Gums

A dark spot on a tooth can be decay, staining, or something else. Sensitivity can come from a cavity, from a worn surface, or from a receding gum. Gums that bleed, swell or hurt when you brush may be gum disease, which is a different problem from a cavity and needs its own assessment. This page cannot tell those apart from a description.

A Filling And A Root Canal Are Different Treatments

Treatment depends on how far the decay has gone. The NHS says a dentist may use fluoride to reverse early decay, that a hole will usually need a filling, and that decay which has reached the pulp may need a root canal. Sometimes the tooth is removed. HCT publishes a composite filling at £50. That line is a tooth-coloured repair of a hole. It is not a root canal. If the pulp is involved, the separate root canal treatment lines are £60 for a front tooth, £100 for a premolar and £220 for a molar. Those three figures are not filling prices, and they are not a single fee that changes by how worried you are.

TreatmentPublished HCT Line
Composite Filling£50, tooth-coloured. A repair for a hole in the tooth. A different treatment from a root canal.
Root Canal, Front Tooth£60 when the pulp of a front tooth needs treatment. Not a filling fee.
Root Canal, Premolar£100 for a premolar. A different tooth and a different line from the front-tooth fee.
Root Canal, Molar£220 for a molar. Not a larger version of the £50 filling.

The figures are a guide. They are confirmed after a dentist has examined the tooth, because the depth of the decay decides which line applies. This page does not publish UK fees. Check the same numbers on the HCT dental price list before you compare a quote. A quote that mixes a filling and a root canal into one unnamed price has not said which treatment it is.

Whitening Does Not Repair Decay

Whitening changes the colour of enamel. It does not put minerals back into a cavity, close a hole, or replace either a filling or a root canal. Decay is not cured by whitening. A tooth with decay needs to be examined first. Teeth whitening is a colour treatment. It is a different intent from stopping decay or repairing a hole.

05

Care That Lowers The Chance

You lower the chance by meeting sugar less often, by cleaning plaque away with fluoride, and by having a dentist look before a hole is deep. These steps reduce the acid challenge. They do not promise that a cavity will never form.

HabitWhy It Helps
Sugar At MealtimesFewer separate acid periods through the day. The amount still matters as well.
Water Between MealsThe teeth are not bathed in sugary drinks between those meals.
Fluoride ToothpasteBrush twice a day. Spit. Do not rinse the toothpaste straight off.
Clean Between TeethFloss or an interdental brush reaches contacts the brush misses.
Dental ChecksThe dentist sets the interval. Early mineral loss can be found before a hole.

What Home Care Cannot Do

Home care does not open a tooth, and it does not confirm that a spot is safe. If a tooth hurts, if a filling breaks, or if the gum beside a tooth swells, contact a dentist rather than waiting for the next routine visit. Do not try to file a dark spot or to push a filling back into place. A hole that is already there needs an examination, not a new toothpaste alone.

The Clinic And Patient Reviews

HCT Dental Clinic sees patients in Antalya and Istanbul. A useful reply names the tooth, what was seen, and whether the plan is a filling, a root canal, or a check only. A single price in a message, with no tooth and no treatment name, is not that plan.

Who Examines The Tooth

The dentists who examine and restore teeth are named on the HCT doctors page. Ask who will look at the tooth and who will do the repair if one is needed. This article is an editorial guide. It is not a record that a named clinician has signed it as a medical review.

Questions About Tooth Decay

What Causes Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay starts when bacteria in plaque turn sugar into acid. That acid can weaken enamel. How often sugar is taken matters, as well as how much, because each intake can start another acid period.

Does How Often You Have Sugar Matter?

Yes. Each time sugar is taken, plaque can produce acid again. Keeping sugary food and drink to mealtimes, rather than sipping or snacking through the day, shortens how long the teeth stay under attack. The amount still matters. Frequency is not a reason to ignore it.

Can Early Tooth Decay Be Reversed?

Early decay, before a hole has formed, can sometimes reharden. A dentist may use a fluoride varnish or mouthwash for that stage. A hole does not close by itself.

Does Whitening Cure Tooth Decay?

No. Whitening changes the colour of enamel. It does not remove decay, close a hole, or replace a filling or a root canal. Decay is not cured by whitening.

What Are The Early Signs Of A Cavity?

Decay may cause no symptoms at first. Later signs can include sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet things, a white, brown or black spot, or pain. A spot or a pain is a reason to see a dentist. This page cannot diagnose it.

Who Has A Higher Chance Of Tooth Decay?

People who have sugary food and drink often, who leave plaque on the teeth, or who have less saliva have a higher chance. Children can be affected. Adults can develop new decay as well. This is not a personal risk score.

Does A Dry Mouth Raise The Chance Of Decay?

Saliva helps return the mouth towards a safer state after sugar. When saliva is low, that buffering is weaker. Tell the dentist about a dry mouth and about medicines you take. This page cannot say which medicine is the cause.

How Much Is A Composite Filling At HCT?

The published composite filling is £50. It is a different treatment from a root canal. The fee is a guide and is confirmed after the tooth is examined.

When Is A Root Canal Different From A Filling?

A filling repairs a hole in the tooth. A root canal is considered when decay has reached the pulp. The published root canal lines are £60 for a front tooth, £100 for a premolar and £220 for a molar. Those figures are not filling prices.

Can Baby Teeth Decay?

Yes. Baby teeth can decay, especially when sugary drinks are taken often. Decay in a baby tooth is still a reason for a dental check. This page does not set a treatment plan for a child.

Does Stress Cause Tooth Decay?

Stress does not produce the acid. It can change habits, such as more frequent sugary snacks or brushing that is skipped. Those habits are what raise the chance.

How Can I Lower The Chance Of A Cavity?

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and spit without rinsing. Clean between the teeth daily. Keep sugary food and drink to mealtimes. See a dentist at the interval they advise. These steps lower the chance. They do not promise that a cavity will never form.

Ask The Clinic About A Possible Cavity

Send a photograph of the tooth if you have one, say how long it has been sensitive, and list medicines that dry your mouth. Ask the reply to name the tooth and whether any fee mentioned is the £50 composite filling or one of the root canal lines. The examination confirms which, if either, applies.
