A digital smile design preview places a proposed tooth shape on your photographs and a scan before any enamel is removed. The picture is a plan. It is not the ceramic you would wear, and it is not an after photograph.

A digital smile design preview is a drawing of a proposed smile on photographs and a scan, made so you can see a direction before any enamel is removed. The drawing is a plan. The ceramic, if you go ahead, is made afterwards, and an after photograph would be a record of that finished work. It is for someone who wants to look at a proposal while the enamel is still intact, and who understands the picture can change after the examination. What The Preview Shows
The preview shows a proposed tooth shape, length and arrangement on pictures of your face. It can also show how the lips sit at rest and when you smile. It does not show the ceramic that will be bonded, the way the bite will feel after any preparation, or a result that has already been fitted. Colour on a screen shifts with the display. The shade is chosen in the clinic, against the teeth, not from a photograph alone.

A useful preview is one you can disagree with. If the teeth look too long, too square or too bright, that comment belongs in the plan before anyone picks up a bur. Approval of the picture is a planning step. It is not a promise that the ceramic will copy the screen in every detail.

How The Design Is Made
The design starts with records of your face and your teeth, then a drawing you can comment on. The records do not remove enamel. The drawing is a proposal the dentist and the technician can still change.
Photographs And The Scan
The clinic photographs the face at rest and while smiling, and often records a short video of speech so the lip line is not judged from one still frame. An intraoral scan builds a model of the teeth. Older putty impressions are not required for this planning step when the scan is clear. The midline of the teeth is compared with the midline of the face, and the lip position is used to judge tooth length. Those references guide the drawing. They do not produce one correct smile for every face.
The Drawing
The shapes are drawn in Exocad, the CAD software this clinic uses for that drawing. Tooth length, the line of the gums and the width of the front teeth can be adjusted while you look. A shade guide is used in the room because a screen cannot hold a ceramic colour. The drawing can be sent to the laboratory as the shape to try. It is not the prescription for how much enamel, if any, will be removed. That decision waits for the examination.

Who The Preview Suits
The preview suits someone who is considering a change to the visible teeth and wants to see a proposal before enamel is removed. It is a planning aid. It is not a test that proves a particular veneer, crown or gum procedure is appropriate.
When It May Be Suitable
Chipped, worn, uneven or darkened front teeth are common reasons to look at a drawing. Small gaps and a tooth that sits slightly inward can also be discussed on the screen, because those shapes sometimes leave room for ceramic. The gums should be healthy enough to assess, or treated before any cosmetic work. You should be able to say what you want to change, and to hear that the picture may not be the final shape.
When It May Not Be Suitable
Active gum disease, a bite that cannot be made stable, and a medical condition that is not under control can delay elective cosmetic work. Pregnancy is a reason to postpone elective preparation. Wanting the screen image itself, or wanting every tooth left uncut, is not by itself a plan. Crowded or very prominent teeth often need space that a no-prep shell cannot create.

The Mock-Up And The Visit
The records are taken at the clinic. A mock-up is often tried before any enamel is removed. The clinic confirms the timing for your own case. A reply based only on photographs you send from home is a first look, not the examination.
Before Enamel Is Removed
A mock-up is a temporary resin copy of the drawing, seated over the teeth you already have. You can look in a mirror, speak, and ask for a shorter tooth or a softer corner. The resin is then removed. Placing it does not drill the tooth and does not need an injection. Local anaesthetic is discussed only if, on a later step, the teeth are prepared.
If Veneers Are Chosen
When E.max veneers are the plan and the teeth need space for the ceramic, the usual preparation at HCT is about 0.3–0.5 mm of enamel. That is a shallow reduction on the front of the tooth. It is not a crown preparation, and it is not a promise that every tooth will be cut. No preparation is used only when the tooth already has room for the shell, for example where a small gap or a slightly inward tooth leaves space. A crowded or prominent tooth does not become a no-prep case because the screen picture looks neat. An E.max veneer is published at £200 a tooth. Limits, Risks And Aftercare
The preview can look smoother and more even than ceramic will look in the mouth. It is lit by a screen, not by daylight on a tooth. The mock-up sits on unprepared teeth, so it does not rehearse the bite after enamel has been reduced. If the plan later adds gum treatment, crowns, or more teeth, the drawing has to be made again.
If The Teeth Are Prepared
Preparation can leave the tooth sensitive, especially if the reduction reaches dentine. Thin ceramic can chip. The gum at the edge can be sore while it settles. Grinding and smoking raise the chance of chipping and of gum problems. None of those risks is removed by approving a picture. After a mock-up only, the resin comes off and the teeth are as they were. If enamel is prepared, the clinician gives a temporary cover and written advice for eating, cleaning and when to call. This page is not that note.
Contact the clinic if a temporary comes away, the bite feels high, or pain is increasing rather than settling. Do not try to glue a temporary back with a household product. Ask the clinic before you book a flight on a day when teeth have been prepared. Airline rules are yours to check.
Other Ways To Change A Smile
Whitening changes colour and leaves the shape of the enamel. Bonding adds resin to a chip or a small gap and can often be adjusted in the chair. Orthodontics moves teeth when crowding would otherwise need heavier preparation. The preview can be used to talk through those choices. It does not replace the examination, and it does not make one of them the right plan.
