How An In-Clinic Laser Whitening Visit Works

The In-Clinic Visit

The in-clinic method is usually one appointment. The dentist decides whether the gel is appropriate before it is opened. A photograph sent in advance can start that conversation. It does not replace the examination, and it does not book a shade.

Before The Gel Goes On

The dentist looks for cavities, leaking fillings, sore gums and teeth that are already crowned or bonded. A shade tab is held against the natural teeth so the starting colour is written down. Daylight is more useful for that record than the operating lamp alone. If tartar or a heavy surface stain would stop the gel sitting evenly, the dentist may clean the teeth first. That clean is not automatically inside the £180. Say if a tooth already zings with cold, and name any gel allergy before you sit down.

Isolation, Gel And Light

A retractor keeps the lips and cheeks away from the teeth. A barrier covers the gum margin so the gel stays on enamel. The peroxide gel is then applied to the teeth that are being lightened. The light is switched on while that gel is in place. Eyes are protected when the light is used. The dentist may remove the gel and apply it again. How many times that happens is a clinical decision. This page does not print a fixed number of minutes or a fixed number of cycles.

A routine whitening visit does not use an injection. You can still feel cold or a short zing in a tooth while the gel is on. Tell the dentist if that becomes more than you can sit with. The gel is removed at the end, and the shade is looked at again so you can see what changed on the natural teeth. The NHS describes surgery whitening in the same terms: a gel, sometimes with a laser, after the dentist has checked that the teeth and gums are healthy enough.

Home Trays After The Chair

The home kit is a different line. Impressions or a scan are used to make trays that fit your own teeth, and you are shown how much gel to place and how long to wear them. The NHS describes dentist-made trays as something people wear over a number of weeks, not as a single evening. HCT does not publish one wear calendar for every patient. The sheet you are given is the instruction to follow. Using more gel, or wearing the trays for longer than you were told, is a common way to irritate the gum. A kit bought from a shop is not these trays, and it is not supervised in the same way.

Who The Visit Suits

The visit is considered for adults whose natural teeth look darker and whose mouth is healthy enough for a strong gel. It does not reshape a tooth, close a gap, or replace a restoration. Suitability is decided at the examination.

A tooth that is dark after a root filling, or stained from the inside, may change very little. A smile made mostly of crowns will not become one even colour from gel. The dentist should say which teeth can lighten before the appointment is treated as agreed. Assessment is required. It is not a self-diagnosis from a photograph.

The Three Published Whitening Scopes

HCT lists £180 for in-clinic whitening, £130 for home bleaching and £300 for the combined line. These are three separate scopes. Ask which method is proposed and what the line includes; do not create a combined total by adding unit rows.

What The Gel Does Not Change

Whitening lightens natural teeth. Crowns, veneers and bonding do not contain enamel the gel can bleach, so they stay the colour they were made. If those teeth show when you smile, they can look darker once the natural teeth are lighter. The Oral Health Foundation states the same limit for crowns, veneers and fillings. Crowns, Veneers And Bonding

Tell the dentist which front teeth are already restored. A plan that only bleaches the natural teeth beside an old crown can make the crown more obvious, not less. Changing that crown is a different treatment and a different fee. Whitening also does not add length, close a space, or repair a chip. Those are shape problems. Gel does not solve them.

Decay And Gum Disease

Whitening does not treat decay or gum disease. A cavity needs its own care. Inflamed gum needs its own care. Putting gel on either can hurt and can make the problem worse. The Oral Health Foundation advises against whitening when decay or gum disease is still untreated. Those conditions are handled first, or the visit is postponed. The gel is not a substitute for a filling or for periodontal treatment.

After The Appointment

Most people can leave the same day and can travel the same day. Whitening is not surgery. Sensitivity can still happen, and the colour is not permanent. The written instructions you take home override a general page if they differ.

Sensitivity

A cold zing during the gel, or for a short time afterwards, is a known effect. It often settles within a day or two. The gum can sting if the gel touched it. White spots that were already in the enamel can look more obvious for a while. A tooth with a deep filling, a crack, or a root filling can ache. Stop the home gel and contact the clinic, or a dentist at home, if the pain is severe or the gum stays broken. Sensitivity is a reason to pause. It is not a reason to apply more gel.

The First Two Days

Water is fine straight away. For about 48 hours, enamel takes up stain more readily, so it is sensible to limit tea, coffee, red wine, strongly coloured food and smoking. Use any home gel only at the dose you were shown. The NHS says the lighter colour is not permanent, and that the effect may last for around 3 years if you follow your dentist's advice. The Oral Health Foundation describes a span from a few months up to three years, shorter when someone smokes or often has staining drinks. Those are general descriptions. They are not a shade booked for you, and they are not a date HCT can stamp on every case.
