What A Whitening Result Can Look Like

For what happens during the appointment, read the in-clinic whitening visit guide. The clinical whitening offer covers fees and suitability; this guide focuses on interpreting a result.

A whitening result is a lighter colour in natural teeth. Yellow and brown surface stains, often from drinks or tobacco, are the usual reason people ask about it. The teeth can look cleaner and brighter. They do not change shape, and they do not become a porcelain facing. A shade tab can record the colour before and after. The number of tabs between those two readings is not a result this page publishes, because it is not the same for every mouth.

Natural Teeth, Not A Promised Shade

Whitening agents lighten enamel and the dentine underneath. That is why two people who book the same appointment can leave looking different. Thick enamel, a grey starting colour from inside the tooth, and stains that sit deep can all change how much difference you see. A photograph of someone else's smile is not a forecast. The dentist can hold a shade guide against your teeth in daylight and under the surgery light, then tell you what is realistic for those teeth.

That guide and this one stay separate. One answers how the appointment is done. This one answers what the colour can look like afterwards, how long that colour may last, and which restorations will not lighten.

The Published Whitening Fees

If a quote names a whitening fee, it should use the published rows. Laser teeth whitening is £180 (EUR 210, USD 240). The home whitening kit is £130 (EUR 150, USD 170). Combined whitening, clinic and home, is £300 (EUR 350, USD 400). The combined line is its own row. It is not £180 plus £130. The figure is confirmed after a clinical assessment. These fees buy whitening of natural teeth. They do not buy a promised shade, and they do not change a crown, a veneer or bonding. HCT does not describe the treatment as pain-free, the best, or the cheapest.

How Long A Result May Last

A whitening result is not permanent. The NHS says the effect may last for around 3 years if you follow your dentist's advice. The Oral Health Foundation says results can last several years, and that this varies. Both are general descriptions of whitening. Neither is a duration HCT can promise you. Diet, tobacco, cleaning and the type of stain all sit between a lighter colour and the colour you see a year later.

Coffee, Tea And Smoking

Coffee, tea and smoking can stain natural teeth again. Red wine can do the same. The NHS lists coffee, tea, red wine and smoking among the reasons teeth become darker in the first place. A lighter result does not seal the enamel against new pigment. Someone who drinks tea or coffee through the day, or who smokes, can see the colour deepen sooner than someone who rarely does either. That is a habit effect. It is not a fault in the shade guide.

Why The Colour Can Return

Surface stains sit on the outside of the tooth and are the stains whitening is often asked to fade. New stains of the same kind can collect again on a clean tooth. A colour that comes from inside the tooth, or from a material glued onto it, is a different problem. Whitening does not repaint that material. If the teeth look patchy later, the usual reasons are new stains on the natural teeth, a restoration that never lightened, or both. A review with the dentist can tell those apart. It cannot turn the original result into a fixed date.

Home cleaning keeps plaque off the tooth so new stains have less to cling to. It does not freeze the colour. If you want the teeth looked at again, say what you drink and whether you smoke, and bring the shade note from the first visit if you have one. The second reading is a comparison. It is not a top-up that has already been promised.

Crowns, Veneers And Bonding

Crowns, veneers and bonding do not lighten. Whitening changes natural tooth tissue. A crown, a veneer or a layer of bonding resin is a material made in a chosen colour. The gel does not move that colour. The Oral Health Foundation states that whitening will not work on fillings, crowns or veneers. The American Dental Association states that bleaching affects natural teeth, and that tooth-coloured restorations do not change colour. Bonding is a tooth-coloured resin, in the same sense as a filling, so it stays as it was made.

What Does Not Change Colour

A crown covers the whole visible tooth. A veneer covers the front. Bonding is resin added to the tooth, often to close a small gap or rebuild a chip. None of those surfaces takes up the whitening gel the way enamel does. An implant crown is a restoration too, so the crown on it stays its made colour even if the natural teeth beside it look lighter. Dentures are the same kind of limit: the plastic teeth do not bleach with the natural ones.

Wanting every tooth the same light colour is a common request. On a mouth that is all natural enamel, whitening is the treatment that addresses stain. On a mouth that already has ceramic or resin, the even colour depends on those restorations as well. This page does not turn that request into a veneer plan. It only marks the limit: the existing crown, veneer or bonding will not lighten with the gel.

Sensitivity And Who It May Suit

Sensitivity can happen. Professional whitening uses peroxide gels that reach the tooth. The NHS lists teeth becoming sensitive to cold or sweet food and drink, and sore gums, among the side effects. The American Dental Association describes temporary tooth sensitivity and gum inflammation as the most common adverse effects. A soft shield or paste may be used on the gums. Side effects can still occur for a short time. This page does not call the procedure pain-free.

Sensitivity Can Happen

Some people feel a sharp response to cold air or a cold drink during the appointment or over the following days. Others feel very little. A history of sensitive teeth is a reason to say so before you travel, not a reason for the clinic to promise you will feel nothing. Desensitising products may be suggested. They reduce a symptom for some people. They are not a guarantee that sensitivity will be absent.

When It May Not Be Suitable

The NHS says whitening is not done when you are 17 or younger, or when the teeth or gums are unhealthy. It is also not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. It is not the way to lighten crowns, dentures or implants, because only natural teeth change colour. Active decay or gum disease is treated first, or whitening is postponed, so the gel is not used on a tooth or gum that is not ready. Those limits come from an examination. A message app photograph cannot apply them for you.

If the colour you dislike is mostly a crown, a veneer or bonding, whitening the neighbouring natural teeth can make the difference more obvious. In that case the honest result is a lighter natural tooth beside a restoration that looks the same as before. Hear that before you agree. The dentist confirms whether whitening is suitable, which published fee line applies, and whether any restoration would need its own plan.
