What The Phrase Covers

Veneers, Crowns And Implants

Each option sits on something different. The NHS describes a veneer as a facing that disguises a discoloured or chipped tooth, and a crown as a cap that covers a real tooth after that tooth has been shaped. An implant, in the US Food and Drug Administration’s patient explanation, is a fixture placed in the jaw, with a separate crown on top. HCT uses those same distinctions. A Veneer On A Tooth That Is Still There

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth. To fit some veneers, a little enamel is removed from the front so the shell does not look bulky. Some designs remove less, and some teeth need more. The amount is decided on that tooth. It is not a standard shave taken from a photograph of someone else.

HCT lists an E.max veneer at £200 a tooth. That line is one unit. It does not become a whole-mouth fee by multiplying a guess, because the examination may change the tooth count or show that a tooth needs a crown instead. A Crown After The Tooth Is Reduced

A crown covers the visible part of a tooth that has been reduced so the crown can fit over it. The reduction goes further than the front-surface preparation used for many veneers. Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ patient leaflet makes that comparison directly: a veneer is thin and covers the front, while a crown involves more removal of tooth structure and covers the tooth that has been reshaped.

A crown is often discussed when a tooth is broken, heavily filled, or weak after root treatment. Using crowns on sound teeth only to change their colour is a different decision, because healthy enamel is removed and cannot be put back. An Implant Where A Tooth Is Missing

An implant is for a gap, or for a tooth that cannot be kept. A fixture is placed in the bone. After the bone has held it, an abutment connects the fixture to a crown. That crown is the visible tooth. It is not a veneer on a natural root, and the £160 zirconia crown above is not this implant crown.

Placement is surgery. Healing often takes several months, commonly discussed as about three to six months, before the final tooth is fitted. That range is a typical window, not a date for every jaw. Bone, gum health and the bite can add stages. This overview does not publish implant fees. Those figures belong on the implant pages and on the price list, because an implant quote is a different scope from a veneer or a single crown.

A Smile Makeover Is A Plan

If several teeth are being changed, and the work may mix veneers, crowns or other treatment, that is a smile makeover. It is a plan for a mouth, not a stock package of one material. HCT lists a smile makeover from £1,780, confirmed after assessment. The starting figure does not state how many teeth are included, and it does not promise a particular shade or shape.

These are the only fees in this article. Check them on the HCT dental price list before you compare a quote. A proposal should use the same names: veneer, crown, implant or makeover, and it should say what is not included.

Who Each Option May Suit

Suitability is about the tooth in front of the dentist, the gum around it, and the bite. It is not something a smile photograph can settle. The notes below are reasons a clinician may discuss an option. They are not a way to choose your own treatment.

When An Implant May Be Discussed

The tooth is already missing, or it cannot be repaired in a way that is worth keeping. The site needs enough bone, or a graft the surgeon is prepared to plan, and the gum needs to be healthy enough to work on. Wanting a tooth to look different is not, by itself, a reason to remove it and place an implant.

When It May Not Be Suitable

Active gum disease is treated before elective veneers, crowns or implant surgery. A bite that grinds heavily can chip thin ceramic, so the plan may need adjusting or a night guard rather than a brighter shade. Pregnancy is a reason to postpone elective surgery and, often, elective tooth reduction. A wish for every tooth to be the same colour is not a reason to crown healthy teeth.

Uncontrolled medical conditions that affect healing, and some medicines, change an implant assessment. Tell the clinic before you book travel. This page cannot tell you that you are suitable. The examination can.

Turning The Options Into An Individual Plan

The dentist should explain which teeth are being treated, the restoration proposed for them and why that choice fits the problem. Ask about alternatives, preparation and any teeth that can be retained. A cosmetic change and replacing missing teeth are different planning tasks.

After The Teeth Are Fitted

The first days are about the bite, sensitivity, and cleaning the edges. They are not a sightseeing plan. This page does not set airline rules. If you are flying, check that with the airline and follow the written advice you were given at the clinic.

The First Days

A new bite can feel high. If one tooth hits before the others, contact the clinic rather than leaving it, because an early contact can make a tooth ache or can chip ceramic. Sensitivity to cold is common after preparation and often settles. Pain that increases, swelling, or a crown or veneer that feels loose is a reason to call, using the number on your instructions.

Choose softer food while you are told the bite is settling. Do not use the new teeth to bite nails, pens, or ice. Smoking and a grinding habit raise the chance of chips and of gum problems around the work. If a night guard is prescribed, it is part of looking after the ceramic, not an optional extra you can ignore because the teeth look finished.

Care Once You Are Home

Clean the margins the way you were shown. Veneers and crowns still collect plaque where they meet the gum, and the other teeth still need ordinary dentistry. See a dentist at home for checks. Take the written plan with you: which teeth were treated, whether each one is a veneer or a crown, and the material name. Those records help maintenance. They do not oblige every dentist to repair the work, and they are not a promise that a chip or a loose crown will be remade at no cost.

An implant has a longer home period between visits, while the bone holds the fixture. Cleaning during that time follows the surgeon’s instructions. The final tooth is not “done” on the day of surgery unless the written plan says a temporary is being used, and a temporary is not the finished crown.
