Night Guard · Grinding And Clenching
Why A Night Guard Is Used For Grinding
A night guard is a cover worn over the teeth, usually at night, so the teeth do not grind against each other. It does not whiten the teeth, straighten them, or replace a crown or a veneer. A custom guard is confirmed after the bite is checked, and the written quote names the fee.

People look for a night guard because they grind or clench, often in sleep. The guard is a cover on one arch. It keeps the upper and lower teeth from wearing directly against each other. It does not bleach the teeth, move them, or rebuild a broken edge. Worn teeth, sensitive teeth, or a painful jaw are reasons to be examined. Treatment is not always needed. At HCT a custom guard is confirmed only after the bite is checked, and the written quote names the fee.
01
What A Night Guard Is For
A night guard is for grinding and clenching. The NHS describes teeth grinding, also called bruxism, as something that can happen while you are awake or asleep, and as often related to stress or anxiety. A dentist may recommend a mouth guard or mouth splint. Those covers are worn at night and protect the teeth from damage. They can be made to fit precisely over the upper or the lower teeth. The dentist chooses the arch. This page does not promise that the same arch suits every bite.
Grinding And Clenching
Grinding is the teeth moving against each other. Clenching is the jaw held tight. A partner may hear the grinding in sleep. You may notice a sore jaw, pain in the face or ear, or teeth that chip, wear down, or feel sensitive. The NHS also lists worn-down or broken teeth, and the loss of teeth and fillings, among the possible results. Those signs are a reason to see a dentist. They are not a diagnosis you can make from a photograph of a smile.
The cause is not always clear. Stress and anxiety are the link the NHS puts first. Some medicines, and drinking a lot of alcohol or caffeine, are also listed. A GP is the right place for help with stress, anxiety, smoking, drinking too much, or drugs. A guard does not replace that conversation. Relaxing before bed, a regular bedtime, and a dark, quiet room are among the steps the NHS suggests people can try. They are habits, not a device.
What The Guard Protects
The job of the guard is to take the contact, so the teeth are less likely to wear against each other while it is in place. It does not switch the habit off. If the jaw is painful or swollen, the NHS suggests an ice pack wrapped in a tea towel for 20 to 30 minutes, and says not to chew gum or eat hard foods while a tooth or the jaw hurts. Those steps sit beside a guard. They are not a reason to file a tooth or to tighten a guard at home.
02
What A Guard Does Not Change
A night guard does not whiten teeth, straighten them, or replace a crown or a veneer. If the aim is a different colour, a different position, or a new shape, that is a different treatment. A guard can still be discussed when grinding is damaging teeth that already have dental work, because the guard and the repair answer different questions.
Colour And Shape
Whitening changes colour. Orthodontics moves teeth. A veneer is a facing placed on a tooth that is still there, and it changes what you see. None of that is what a night guard does. Wearing a guard will not make the teeth look lighter in the morning, and it will not close a gap or even out an edge. If the teeth are already worn or broken, the guard does not rebuild them. The dentist says whether a repair is needed as well, and that repair is its own plan.
Crowns, Veneers And A Sports Shield
A crown covers a damaged tooth. A night guard does not become a crown because someone grinds, and it does not stand in for a veneer. Someone who already has a crown or a veneer may still be assessed for a guard, so that grinding is not left to land straight on that work. That assessment protects. It does not replace the crown or the veneer, and it does not promise that the work will never need attention.
A sports gum shield is a different device. It is worn for impact in sport, not as the night cover described here. This page does not set out a sports guard, and it does not describe a device for sleep apnoea. Breathing that stops or struggles during sleep needs its own assessment.
03
Who May Be Assessed For A Guard
A dentist considers a guard when grinding is marking the teeth or the jaw, and the NHS is clear that treatment is not always needed. Suitability is the bite, the state of the teeth and gums, and whether a cover at night is the useful step. Wanting a new smile colour is not that step.
When It May Be Considered
Tooth damage, sensitive teeth, or pain in the jaw, face or ear are reasons the NHS gives for seeing a dentist. So is a partner who hears grinding in sleep. A custom guard is one option the dentist may recommend after looking at those signs. It is worn at night.
When It May Not Be The Right Step
Grinding that is not damaging the teeth may need no device. A request for whiter, straighter, or newly shaped teeth is not met by a guard. A painful jaw that might be temporomandibular disorder needs an examination. A guard is not described here as a cure for that condition.
Adults, Children And The Daytime Bite
This page is about adults. The NHS says to see a dentist if you are worried about a child grinding their teeth. A child is assessed on their own. This article does not prescribe a guard for them. Daytime clenching is also real. A cover made for the night does not, by itself, change a habit that happens while you are awake. Tell the dentist when the grinding happens. If stress, medicines, alcohol or caffeine are part of the picture, say so, and use a GP where the NHS points you there.
Gums that bleed, teeth that are loose, or a tooth that is already broken may need care before a guard is made, or instead of one. The examination decides the order. Pregnancy, a medical condition, or a medicine you take should be on the form before any appliance is planned. This page cannot screen those from a message alone.
04
How The Fit And The Fee Are Confirmed
A custom guard is confirmed after the bite is checked, and the written quote names the fee. The HCT dental price list does not include a night-guard row, which is why this page does not print one. A shop price is not printed here either. A reply that has not seen the bite is not the quote.
A Shop-Bought Guard And A Dentist-Made Guard
They differ in fit. A shop-bought soft guard is a ready-made shape, or a shape you mould at home after softening it. It is not taken from a dentist’s record of your teeth and your bite. A dentist-made guard is made after that record exists, so the cover follows the arch the dentist has chosen, upper or lower. A closer fit is the point of the record. It is not a promise that the guard will feel invisible, or that grinding will stop.
| Guard | How The Fit Is Made |
|---|---|
| Shop-Bought Soft Guard | A ready-made shape, or a mould you form at home. It is not made from a dentist’s record of the bite. |
| Dentist-Made Guard | Made after the teeth and the bite have been checked. The fit follows that record. The written quote names the fee. |
Neither row is a whitening tray, an aligner, a crown, or a veneer. Buying the softer shop version because it is easy to find does not turn it into a custom guard. Asking the clinic for a custom guard does not put a fee on this page. The price list is the public list of published lines, and a night guard is not one of them.
What Happens At The Visit
The visit is an examination, not a colour consultation and not a smile redesign. The dentist looks at wear, cracks, sensitivity, the gums, and how the teeth meet. You should say if a partner hears grinding, if the jaw aches on waking, and if you already wear a shop guard. Bring that guard if you have one. It shows what you have been biting on. It is not the prescription.
- 01Before The VisitDescribe when you grind, any jaw or face pain, and any crown, veneer or loose filling. Name medicines you take.
- 02The Bite CheckThe dentist examines the teeth and how they meet. A custom guard is confirmed only if that check supports one.
- 03The Written QuoteIf a guard is to be made, the quote names the fee, the arch, and what the guard is not going to change.
- 04ReviewIf the guard feels high, cracks, or stops sitting as it did, it is checked again. It is not reshaped at home.
HCT does not sell a night guard from this page as a plastic item to post to another country. A message that asks for a guard to be sent to London, or to any other city, still starts with the bite. City names in a search do not create a second clinic. The examination is at HCT Dental Clinic. The address is in Antalya.
05
Care, Limits And Risks
A guard protects the teeth while it fits and while it is worn as advised, usually at night. It can wear down, it can crack, and a poor fit can make the jaw feel worse. Those are reasons for a review. They are not a reason to boil a dentist-made guard and bite it into a new shape.
Looking After The Guard
Clean it the way the clinic or the product note shows. Rinse it after use and store it in a clean case, not loose in a bag where it can bend. Do not boil a dentist-made guard to reshape it at home. A shop-bought guard that is meant to be softened in hot water is a different product, and that home step is not how the clinic adjusts a guard it has made. Very hot water is how some shop guards are formed. It is also how a cover can warp. Follow the note that belongs to the guard you actually have.
Bring the guard to a dental check-up. The NHS already recommends regular check-ups for people who grind. The visit is where a thin, cracked, or unstable guard is replaced or left as it is. This page does not give a fixed number of months, because the bite and the wear decide. If the teeth are still being damaged, the guard may be the wrong shape, or the grinding may need a wider plan than a cover.
Risks To Discuss
A guard that feels high can change how the jaw rests. Tell the clinic rather than trimming it. A shop-bought guard was not made from the clinic’s record, so the fit is checked rather than assumed. Soreness of the gum under a new cover can settle, and soreness that grows is a reason to stop and ask. An allergy to a material should be said before a guard is made.
A guard does not treat decay, does not replace a lost filling, and does not repair a broken tooth. It does not cure jaw-joint pain. Studies and the NHS page describe grinding in general. They do not give you a personal result, and HCT does not print one. The written quote is a fee for the guard that was planned. It is not a guarantee that wear, sensitivity, or jaw pain will end.

The HCT Team And Patient Reviews
HCT Dental Clinic assesses the bite in Antalya before a custom guard is made. A useful reply names whether a guard is even the right question, and it does not invent a fee in place of the written quote. The clinic’s published lines for other treatments are on the price list. A night guard is not among them.

Questions About Night Guards
These answers cover why a guard is used for grinding, what it does not change, and how the fee is named. They are not a personal plan.
What Is A Night Guard Used For?
A night guard is a cover worn over the teeth, usually at night, so the upper and lower teeth do not grind directly against each other. It is for grinding and clenching. It does not change the colour or the shape of the teeth.
Does A Night Guard Whiten Teeth?
No. A night guard does not bleach or whiten teeth. A lighter colour is a different treatment, and it is discussed only after the teeth and the bite have been examined.
Does A Night Guard Straighten Teeth?
No. A night guard does not move teeth into a new position. Straightening is orthodontic treatment. A guard is a cover for grinding, not an aligner.
Can A Night Guard Replace A Crown Or A Veneer?
No. A crown covers a damaged tooth, and a veneer is a facing on a tooth that is still present. A night guard does not rebuild a worn edge or change the visible shape of a tooth. Protecting existing dental work from grinding is not the same as replacing it.
Is A Night Guard On The HCT Price List?
No. The HCT price list has no night-guard row. This page does not print a fee. The written quote, after the bite is checked, is where the fee is named.
How Does A Shop-Bought Guard Differ In Fit?
A shop-bought soft guard is a ready-made shape, or a shape you mould at home. A dentist-made guard is made from a record of the bite. The two differ in fit. This page does not give a shop price or a clinic fee.
Will A Night Guard Stop The Grinding?
It protects the teeth from grinding against each other. It does not, by itself, take away the habit. The NHS describes grinding as often related to stress or anxiety, and says a dentist may recommend a guard to protect the teeth.
Does Everyone Who Grinds Need A Guard?
No. The NHS says treatment for teeth grinding is not always needed. A dentist looks at damage, sensitive teeth, and pain in the jaw, face or ear. Wanting whiter or straighter teeth is not a reason to make a guard.
Can A Night Guard Treat Sleep Apnoea?
No. A night guard for grinding is not a treatment for sleep apnoea. If breathing during sleep is the concern, that needs its own assessment. This page does not describe that device.
How Should A Night Guard Be Looked After?
Clean it the way the clinic or the product note shows, and do not boil a dentist-made guard to reshape it at home. Store it in a clean case. If it cracks, feels high, or no longer sits as it did, bring it to a review rather than adjusting it yourself.
What If A Child Is Grinding Their Teeth?
The NHS says to see a dentist if you are worried about a child grinding their teeth. This page is about adults. A child is assessed separately, and this article does not set out a guard for them.
Is A Night Guard Posted Without A Bite Check?
No. A custom guard is confirmed after the bite is checked. It is not sold from this page as a posted product with a fee attached. The written quote names the fee.
Medical Sources And References
This source describes teeth grinding and a mouth guard in general. It does not set an HCT fee, choose a material, or endorse the clinic.
- NHS — Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)Grinding can happen awake or asleep and is often related to stress or anxiety. Treatment is not always needed. A dentist may recommend a mouth guard or mouth splint, worn at night, to protect the teeth. It can be made to fit precisely over the upper or lower teeth. NHS page reviewed 8 April 2026.
Ask About A Guard For Grinding
Tell the clinic whether you grind in your sleep, whether your jaw is painful, and whether you want a guard rather than a change to the colour or the shape of the teeth. Say if you already use a shop-bought guard. A custom guard is confirmed after the bite is checked, and the written quote names the fee.
